The airfield
Two parallel strips. The number is the magnetic heading: 27 points west, 09 points east. Live pair is highlighted.
Heathrow has two parallel runways. The southern runway is 09R / 27L. The northern runway is 09L / 27R. Aircraft land and take off into the wind, so a west wind means westerlies (the 27s) and an east wind means easterlies (the 09s).
NATS prefers westerlies. The board flips to 09s when there is more than about 5 knots of tailwind on 27 — that is why a light easterly can change the whole spotting day. On westerlies the landing runway usually swaps around 15:00. Easterlies normally keep 09L as the landing runway all day, with no afternoon alternation.
Night-time (23:00–06:00 London) prefers the off-duty daytime landing runway. Always check this page or Radar before you travel — SPECI updates can flip the pair in minutes.
Southern · 09R when reversed
Westerly arrivals over Myrtle Avenue — Heathrow’s classic spotting runway.
Myrtle Avenue for arrivals. Hilton Garden Inn rooftop from ~3pm for 27L departures.
Northern · 09L when reversed
Westerly northern runway — arrivals and a full day of departures depending on the 15:00 switch.
Park & Ride T2/3, Renaissance, Courtyard (after 5pm) and Hilton. Thistle for 27R departures.
Northern · 27R when reversed
Easterly northern runway. On easterlies this is usually the landing runway all day — no afternoon swap.
Thistle T5 and the 09L mound for arrivals.
Southern · 27L when reversed
Easterly southern runway — typically the departure runway. Departures climb out toward the Myrtle side.
Myrtle side for 09R departures. Hilton Garden Inn from 3pm also watches 09R departures.
